Equipment

  • 2 aluminum pizza pans
  • parchment paper
  • flour towel
  • measuring cups
  • large mixing bowl
  • cutting board

Ingredients

  • 3 tsp instant yeast
  • 21 oz water
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ cup pure honey
  • ¼ cup olive oil any kind
  • toppings for pizza any you desire

Instructions

  • First, it's best to weigh ingredients on a kitchen scale set to grams, but you can use these conversions if you don't have one.  Have the kids mix the yeast and water in a bowl; the water should be 80°F.  If your house is around 70°F then that will be perfect.  In a few minutes, when the yeast starts to bubble, kids can top it with the flour and sprinkle it with the salt.  Then, add the honey and the oil.  Let kids mix it by hand, or use a plastic dough scraper until the dough is wet, but firm.
  • Next, let the dough relax uncovered in the bowl for 30 minutes so the flour can absorb the water, making it easier to knead.  Then, flour a cutting board and scrape the dough out onto it.

  • Then, knead the dough; using the heels of your hands, push forward into your dough folding it in half.  Give it a quarter turn and repeat the process.  Keep kneading until you can feel that the dough has tightened up and has gotten smoother, usually 5 to 10 minutes.  Let your kids get in on the action!  Pop your dough back into the bowl, put a floured towel on top, and allow it to rise for 90 minutes.  I've linked a cute flour towel I found on amazon, but if you don't have one, you can use a regular towel.
  • Divide the dough in half (making it into two pizzas).  Line 2 aluminum pizza pans with parchment paper and roll out your pizza dough.  Preheat the oven to 350 °.  Bake for 40 minutes.  Check and pizza dough should be golden brown and sound hollow when thumped with your fingers.  Add whatever toppings you desire and place back in oven for another 5 minutes until toppings have warmed and cheese is melted.

Notes

I've added instructions for what parts your kids can help out on!  This is a perfect activity for a long day home :)  Happy Cooking!
