American Portobello Mushroom Burgers

A savory and tasteful way to eat a burger and still feel healthy!

  • 4 portobello mushrooms gills removed if desired
  • avocado oil cooking spray
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp light mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 4 tsp steak sauce
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 whole-wheat buns
  • 4 large tomato slices
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce or spinach
  • sliced red onion and pickles optional


  • Preheat your grill to medium-high and coat your mushrooms with cooking spray and sprinkle with ground black pepper.
  • Grill, turning occasionally, until tender, about 12 minutes total.
  • Meanwhile, mix your mayo, ketchup, and relish in a small bowl.
  • Transfer your mushrooms to a plate and pat dry with paper towels. Brush with steak sauce and top gills with American cheese and cook until cheese is just melted, about 1 minute more.
  • Serve on buns with your homemade sauce, spinach or lettuce, and onions/pickles; if using.
