These quick and healthy portobello mushroom burgers are anything but ordinary! They have a savory, flavorful taste that will leave you wanting to finish every last bite. They can be grilled up outside or use a grill pan and cook them in.
Also, a fun fact: mushrooms are a natural source of glutamate, a naturally occurring compound that gives the fungi their umami flavor, and to really give these patties a savory boost, I brushed them with steak sauce, and right before eating, I spread the burger sauce onto the buns and devour them!

Ingredients to make these portobello mushroom burgers
You will need the following ingredients.

- portobello mushroom caps - gills removed, turn caps over, and using a spoon, easily scrape out the gills.
- whole-wheat buns - what I put my burger on before eating.
- ground black pepper - adds a bold, spicy, and slightly pungent flavor.
- mayonnaise, sugar-free ketchup, sweet pickle relish - the 3 ingredients that make up the insanely flavorful and delicious portobello burger marinade/sauce.
- steak sauce - adds tang, slight sweetness, and depth without over powering.
How to make this mushroom burger recipe
Step 1 - Start off by preheating your grill or grill pan to medium-high. Coat your mushrooms with cooking spray and sprinkle them with pepper. Grill, turning occasionally, until tender, about 12 minutes total.
Step 2 - Meanwhile, mix your mayo, ketchup, and relish in a small bowl. Transfer mushrooms to a plate and pat dry with paper towels.

Step 3 - Brush with steak sauce and top the gill side of each mushroom with a slice of cheese.
Step 4 - Return the mushrooms to the grill and cook until the cheese is just melted, about 1 minute more. Serve on buns with your homemade vegan burger sauce and desired toppings.
