    Ingredients

These are the only ingredients you will need for this simple appetizer dish!

A birds-eye view of all the ingredients needed to make this recipe with labels included.
    • whole wheat tortillas - each tortilla creates 4 pizza rolls. Making pizza rolls using tortillas is easy peasy. It's super simple to fold it up and when air-fried comes out perfectly crispy!
    • marinara sauce or pizza sauce - to cut corners even more I like to buy my sauce already made, but if you would like to make your sauce from scratch that is also an option.
    • mozzarella cheese - I prefer using shredded cheese because it helps with even distribution. You can either buy the cheese already shredded or buy a block of mozzarella and shred it yourself.
    • basil - using basil will help keep the pizza roll fresh. It also has an incredible aroma and enhances the taste of your pizza rolls.
    • oregano - this is another spice that enhances the flavor of the pizza sauce.
    • garlic powder - I am a lover of garlic and use this spice in most of my recipes. It also enhances the flavor of pizza sauce.

See the recipe card for quantities.

Directions for making homemade pizza rolls

Step-by-step directions on how to make this easy appetizer!

    Step 1 - Using a microwave-safe plate, microwave wraps for 20 - 30 seconds.

Step 2 - Lay the warmed tortilla on a flat surface. Using a spoon, spread the marinara sauce on top of the tortilla in a thin layer.

Steps 1 and 2 of the cooking process.

Step 3 - Top the marinara sauce with the cheese, also in an even layer.

Step 4 - Sprinkle the oregano, basil, and garlic powder on top of the cheese, also in an even layer.

Steps 3 and 4 of the cooking process.

Step 5 - Roll the sides of the tortilla inwards.

Step 6 - Then roll the tortilla in from the top and bottom.

Steps 5 and 6 of the cooking process.

Step 7 - Place the tortillas seam side down in the air fryer and fry at 400 degrees for 6 minutes or until crispy. Then, slice the tortillas evenly into 4 pieces each.

Step 8 - Serve with some more marinara sauce on the side!

Steps 7 and 8 of the cooking process.

Hint: Once your pizza rolls are done cooking and it's time to slice them I highly recommend slicing them using a serrated knife. A serrated knife will slice through the tortilla without smashing it down.

    Substitutions

If you are looking for some swap ideas to put in place of the ingredients I have listed in my recipe card, take a look below.

    • Whole Wheat Tortillas - I am a fan of using whole wheat tortillas over flour tortillas because they have more fiber, but you can use flour tortillas if you prefer.
    • Shredded Mozzarella - I like using shredded cheese because it spreads more evenly throughout the roll-up, but you can try using a cheese stick instead. It will make the final product extra cheesy!
    • Seasonings - The seasonings I have chosen are my staples whenever I make homemade pizza. The possibilities here are quite endless. Some other options are onion powder, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. If you have a great one that you would like to share with me please comment below and let me know!

    Variations

If you are looking for some ways to change up the homemade pizza roll, here are some ideas for you to try!

    • Spicy - add chili pepper flakes as another option for seasonings.
    • Extra Crispy - try brushing your rolled-up tortillas with some olive oil before air frying to give your roll-up an even better crunch!
    • Dairy-Free - try using a dairy-free cheese alternative in place.

    Equipment

The equipment you will need for this delicious snack is listed here!

Air Fryer - In order to make anything in the air fryer, clearly you need an air fryer. This is the one I own and I am obsessed. I love the double basket because you can cook two different types of food at the same time.

    How can the kids help

Like I say for each and every recipe, if the kiddos help make the meal, they will most likely eat it! For this dish here are some simple ways you can include your children in the cooking process.

    • They can help spread the sauce on the tortillas.
    • They can help scatter the cheese on top of the sauce.
    • The kids can help top the cheese with the seasonings.
