Ingredients

  • 4 portobello mushrooms gills removed if desired
  • avocado oil cooking spray
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp sugar-free ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 4 tsp steak sauce
  • 4 slices American cheese optional topping
  • 4 whole-wheat buns
  • 4 large tomato slices optional topping
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce or spinach optional topping
  • sliced red onion and pickles optional topping

Instructions

  • Step 1 - Start off by preheating your grill or grill pan to medium-high.  Coat your mushrooms with cooking spray and sprinkle them with pepper.  Grill, turning occasionally, until tender, about 12 minutes total.
  • Step 2 - Meanwhile, mix your mayo, ketchup, and relish in a small bowl.  Transfer mushrooms to a plate and pat dry with paper towels.
  • Step 3 - Brush with steak sauce and top the gill side of each mushroom with a slice of cheese, if using.
  • Step 4 - Return the mushrooms to the grill and cook until the cheese is just melted, about 1 minute more.  Serve on buns with your homemade sauce and desired toppings.

Notes

How can the kids help?
  • Scraping out the gills
  • Mixing the ingredients to make the sauce
  • Let them build their own burger with their favorite toppings :)
Top Tip!
Cook on high to get a meaty texture, and don't overcrowd the pan or grill!
What are the best sauce pairings?
Tangy - steak sauce
Creamy - aioli
Fresh - chimichurri
Sweet - BBQ sauce
How to store cooked portobello mushroom burgers?
Let mushrooms cool completely, then place in an airtight container. Store buns and burgers separately to avoid sogginess.
