First of all, this Taco Naan Pizza is literally insane!  The Schneider house is a huge fan of tacos and pizza so when you put the two together nothing can go wrong there!  What's better than a crispy piece of naan bread toasted in the oven and slathered with all your favorite savory taco ingredients?

Not much compares there!  This dish also looks like a lot goes into it, but if you've ever made tacos or pizza before you know they both take minimal prep work and don't take long to cook.  One piece of naan bread is usually the perfect amount for me when I make pizza and my husband can scarf down 2.  With this recipe I could barely finish one and it took some work for my husband to eat 2.  This dish is filling!

    What is Naan bread

close up of taco naan pizza on a cutting board
Naan bread is an oven baked flatbread that is found in the cuisines mainly of Western Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia.  It has yogurt, milk, and sometimes eggs or butter in it, resulting in a softer texture than pita.  Naan bread has  no artificial preservatives in it and has an authentic taste.  I always use whole wheat naan, which is made with whole wheat flour, enriched wheat flour, buttermilk, water, soybean or canola oil, wheat bran, brown sugar, cultured wheat flour, baking powder, salt, ghee, sugar, wheat germ, wheat gluten, destrose, dextrin, vegetable fiber, and yeast.

If you aren't sure what all those ingredients are here you go.

Enriched flour is flour with specific nutrients returned to it that have been lost while being prepared.  These restored nutrients include iron and B vitamins.  I call that ingredient a win!  Wheat bran is the hard outer layer of the wheat kernel, which is jam packed with various nutrients and fiber.  Cultured wheat is a natural preservative produced via a unique controlled fermentation of wheat flour.  Cultured wheat can replace chemical preservatives like sorbates and benzoates for a clean label alternative.  Destrose is the naturally-occurring dextrorotatory form of glucose while dextrin is a generic term applied to a variety of products obtained by heating a starch in the presence of small amounts of moisture and an acid.  Dextrin is also a form of fiber.

What do I need to make taco naan pizza?

This is what you will need to make this insane taco pizza!

    1. 1 pound of ground turkey
    2. one 15 oz can of pinto beans
    3. 1½ tsp chili powder
    4. 1½ tsp of cumin
    5. ¼ tsp oregano
    6. ¼ tsp paprika
    7. ½ tsp garlic powder
    8. ½ tsp onion powder
    9. ¹⁄8 tsp ground black pepper
    10. ¹⁄8 tsp kosher salt
    11. ¾ cup salsa
    12. 2 packages of Naan bread (2 come in a pack)
    13. ¼ cup plain greek yogurt (substitute for sour cream) Check out my Chicken Fajitas post for an explanation on why I use plain greek yogurt instead of sour cream
    14. 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
    15. 2 cups of shredded romaine lettuce and fresh cilantro
    16. 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend

This is Naan bread in case you've never heard of it.  I always use the Stonefire brand, that I buy at my local Shop Rite.

Stonefire Naan Authentic Flatbreads, Flavors- original, roasted garlic, and whole wheat -3 pack $29.49

I always cook my naan bread pizza on a pizza pan with holes.  I find it crisps better!

You can't have pizza without a pizza cutter.  Love this little cutter from Kitchy.  This one is super sharp, easy to clean, and has a protective blade guard.

    How to make this pizza

First, preheat a medium-nonstick skillet to medium low heat and add ground turkey.  Cook until cooked through and meat is broken up and no longer pink in the middle, about 10 minutes.  Next, drain meat and put back into skillet.  Add pinto beans, chili powder, cumin, oregano, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and ¼ cup water.   Mix well to combine.

Then, mix in the salsa and remove skillet from heat.  Preheat oven to 400°.  Lay your naan bread onto the pizza tray and top with ground turkey mixture, then top with romaine lettuce, cilantro, and cheese.  In a small bowl combine plain greek yogurt and lime.  Drizzle the plain greek yogurt on top of the cheese.  Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.  Remove from oven and cut into fourths!  Devour!
