This is the easiest and tastiest Baked Fish Taco recipe. The fish is so flaky and tender and the seasonings bring so much flavor to this dish. The homemade healthier fish sauce is also SO good. The best part about this dish is it's done in under 20 minutes. A great weeknight dinner idea the whole family will LOVE!

Mahi Mahi fish tacos in a cream colored dish with 3 limes on top and cherry tomatoes scattered to the side.

I love finding good healthy recipes that require you to bake the meal. It's much easier when you've got minimal time to stand there and cook a whole meal. If you're in the same boat as I am then you should try my Baked Ziti with Ground Turkey recipe and my Super Easy Baked Black Bean Burgers are one of my favorite go-to's.

This recipe is so light and refreshing. It's perfect for those warmer days that are quickly approaching. I am also a stickler for Mexican food. If you are too then you would really enjoy these Mexican Shrimp Tacos or if you are just looking for another light fish meal then you would love my Easy Baked Salmon recipe.

    Ingredients for Healthy Fish Tacos

You will need the following ingredients for this recipe.

A photo of all ingredients for this recipe with labels included.

    For the fish tacos -

    • white fish fillets - halibut, tilapia, or cod are my favorites to use.
    • olive oil - the oil is used to brush onto the fish before you bake it. The oil helps prevent the fish from sticking and also adds more flavor.
    • chili powder - adds a touch of spice to the flavor of the fish.
    • cumin - adds a warm earthy slightly nutty flavor.
    • garlic powder - enhances the flavor and adds a savory and slightly pungent flavor.
    • oregano - adds a bold earthy and slightly peppery flavor.
    • smoked paprika - adds a distinctive smoky and slightly sweet flavor.
    • small corn tortillas - corn tortillas are the traditional option with fish tacos
    • avocado - sliced or cut into pieces. I like adding avocado right into the taco.
    • lime - cut into wedges, I squeeze the lime juice all over the healthy fish tacos right before I stuff one in my mouth.
    • cherry tomatoes - halved, I add these little tomatoes on top of my tacos, as well, but this is an optional ingredient.
    • cilantro - an optional topping to add on to your final product.

    For the sauce -

    • mayonnaise - helps to create a creamy rich sauce.
    • plain Greek yogurt - I use it in place of sour cream to add more protein to the sauce.
    • onion powder - gives an added onion flavor with having chunks of onions in your sauce.
    • sweet chili sauce - adds a sweet tangy and slightly spicy flavoring. One of my favorite sauces.

    Directions

Step-by-step directions for this easy healthy dinner idea. You will find the ingredient quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1 - Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pat dry your fish using paper towels. Brush fish on both sides with olive oil.

Step 2 - In a small mixing bowl combine chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.

Steps one and two of the cooking process to make this recipe.

Step 3 - Rub the spice mixture on both sides of your fish fillets.

Step 4 - Bake fish for 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, for the sauce, in a medium-sized mixing bowl combine the mayonnaise, plain Greek yogurt, onion powder, and sweet chili sauce. Store in the fridge until you use it.

Steps 3 and 4 of the cooking process for this recipe.

Step 5 - Once your fish is cooked through use 2 forks and shred it into pieces.

Step 6 - Assemble your tacos; inside your warmed tortillas place the cooked fish, sliced tomatoes, chopped avocado, cheese of choice, and your homemade creamy fish sauce.

Steps 5 and 6 of the cooking process to make this recipe.

Tip for Success - Remember to make your sauce when the fish is baking so everything is ready at the same time!

    Substitutions and Variations

White Fish - you can also use red fish if you prefer red over white.

Cherry Tomatoes - tomatoes complement fish tacos well, but you can choose whichever type of tomatoes you prefer. Some options are Roma, San Marzano, or Big Beef.

Sweet Chili Sauce - if you prefer more spice to your sauce then swap in Sriracha instead of sweet chili, but only use 1 tsp.

    Cookware needed

To make this delicious flavorful fish taco dish you will need the following cookware.

    • non-stick baking pan - this is what you will bake your fish on.
    • basting brush - to brush your fish with the oil.
    • mixing bowls - to make the fish sauce in and mix the rub in before putting it on your fish.

What to serve with fish tacos?

So many delicious options to serve with fish tacos. Here are some healthy options that I feel pair really well!

    • Cucumber Tomatoes and Avocado Aalad
    • Air Fryer Avocado Fries
    • Loaded Vegetarian Sheet Pan Nachos
    • Avocado and Scallion Salsa to use as a topping.

    How can the kids help?

I love cooking with my kids. There is something so comforting about being in the kitchen with your little ones creating memories together. Here are some fun ways to include them in this recipe.

    • Have them measure out all the ingredients and mix the seasonings together.
    • Teach them step-by-step how to make the easy homemade fish sauce.
    • They can also help assemble their tacos on their own.
