Ingredients for the brownies
Here are all the ingredients you will need to make these easy chickpea brownies.
- chickpeas - drained, once blended the consistency of the chickpeas makes these brownies chewy which is what you want in a brownie.
- bananas - you want the bananas overripe. They will bring a natural sweetness to the brownies along with moisture and a fudgy texture.
- oats - adds to the chewiness of the brownie texture.
- salt - enhances the flavor of the ingredients.
- egg - binds all the ingredients together and acts as a glue to keep the brownies intact.
- pure vanilla extract - adds a warm rich vanilla taste that compliments the chocolate.
- chocolate chips - feel free to add more chocolate chips sprinkled on top right before baking.
- unsweetened cocoa powder - brings a deep chocolate flavor without adding extra sweetness.
- nut milk - I use nut milk because I always have it in my house and it helps if you're looking for dairy-free or vegan options.
- chopped walnuts - optional for that added crunchiness.
- powdered sugar - I like to sprinkle this on at the end to make them look pretty 🙂

Substitutions
If you happen to not have all the ingredients on hand or want to swap any of them out here are some of my suggestions on what works.
Egg - if you are dairy-free then you can replace the egg with applesauce. Use ¼ cup for one egg.
Chocolate Chips -I prefer using dark chocolate chips but you can also use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, I've even used chocolate chunks in this recipe and they came out delicious.
Nut Milk - the nut milk I usually have in my fridge in almond milk, but you can also use oat milk or regular cow's milk.
Variations
The different amount of ways that you can change up brownies are quite endless. Here are some of my favorite add-ins.
- m&m's - adding in extra chocolate just makes these brownies that much more decadent. To make them festive you can change the color of the m&m. For Christmas use red and green, for Easter use light colors, and the list goes on.
- pretzels - this ingredient is one of my top favorite to mix into these brownies. I'm a stickler for salty foods. The combination of salt and sweet with the added crunch has me salivating at this very moment.
- butterscotch morsels - have you ever just eaten butterscotch morsels straight out of the bag? They are that tasty and enhance these brownies that much more.
- walnuts - I usually always use walnuts in this recipe, but my daughter is not a fan and she was helping me make them. They add an extra crunchy deliciousness to this recipe.
- oreos - my kids LOVE Oreos so mashing them up and tossing them in were perfection and this idea came from my kiddos.
Cookware for this healthy dessert
- blender - you can't blend ingredients without a blender. I have owned the Ninja Blender for 7 years and it's never stirred me wrong.
- food processor - if you don't have a blender you can mix your ingredients using a food processor, as well.
- 9 x 9 inch baking pan. An 8 x 8 inch will also work for this recipe.
- small saucepan - for melting the chocolatey goodness.
How can the kids help
Here are some fun ways you can include your children in helping you bake these rich, delicious, healthy, and easy brownies 😉
- A fun math lesson would be teaching your children the different measurements and having them add them to the mix.
- Pressing the buttons on the blender. I don't know why but, my kids fight over who gets to do this.
- Pouring the chickpea mix into the chocolate mix and stirring to combine.
- Deciding what add-in goes into the brownies this time.
Tips and FAQ's
Store the brownies in an airtight container in the fridge or at room temperature. If you store them in the fridge they will last longer than kept at room temperature.
Make sure to continuously whisk the chocolate when it is melting in the saucepan to prevent burning. Chocolate burns easily and then it cannot be used. If you burn it you should remelt another 2 cups.
Yes, you can! Just make sure to slice the brownies into pieces before putting them in the freezer in an airtight container.
